REALITY TV MYTHS
DEBUNKED

Do you flip through channels, only to find yourself glued to the couch for an HGTV binge session? Watching entire seasons of shows like Fixer UpperProperty Brothers and Love It or List It? We’ve all been there! But it can become easy to think what you see on the screen is how it works in real life. That’s when it’s time for a “reality” check.

Reality TV  … vs … Real Life

We can’t always believe what we see on real estate shows, which is why it’s best to understand the differences between reality TV and… reality. While homeownership is something most American wish to achieve, we should always remember it’s not as easy as it looks on TV. We don’t see what’s happening behind the scenes. Let’s take a look at 5 common reality TV show myths that will snap us back to reality:

MYTH #1

BUYERS ONLY LOOK AT 3 HOMES BEFORE DECIDING. Truth?

There may be buyers who fall in love & buy the first home they see, but according to the National Association of Realtors®, the average homebuyer tours 10 homes as part of their search.

MYTH #2

HOMES BUYERS SEE ARE STILL FOR SALE. Truth?

Truth? Don’t be fooled. Everything is staged for TV. Many of the homes shown are already sold & are off the market.

MYTH #3

BUYERS HAVEN’T MADE A DECISION TO BUY YET. Truth?

Truth? There is no way to show the entire buying process in a 30-minute show. TV producers often choose buyers who are have already chosen a home to buy.

MYTH #4

HOMES ALWAYS SELL DURING THE OPEN HOUSE. Truth?

This would be great! Open houses add additional exposure, but they are only one piece of an overall marketing plan. Homes are sold during regular showing appointments too.

MYTH #5

OWNERS DECIDE TO SELL AFTER A 5-MIN CONVO. Truth?

Similar to the buyers portrayed in the shows, many of the sellers have already spent hours on their decision to list their homes & move on with their lives and goals.
